Chatham Marine Cadets

Welcome to Chatham Marine Cadets' Web Pages

First the introduction, I am Trevor Harrison, the new Unit Chairman formally the Chairman of the Parent and Supporters Association (P & SA). It is my job to carry on promoting the Unit, with the assistance of and initiated by Bill Stephney, (former Chairman) for the benefit of all the current and future young people that join this great organisation.

Who are we, what do we stand for and what is our purpose?

We are CHATHAM MARINE CADET UNIT and form part of a worldwide youth movement generally known as THE SEA CADETS. In the UK we are known as THE MARINE SOCIETY AND SEA CADET CORPS. For special and historic reasons we are the ONLY Marine Cadet “UNIT” in the UK, all other Marine Cadets belong to a ‘detachment’ within a Sea Cadet Unit, which follows the pattern with the Senior Service wherein a ship will carry a crew of Sailors and a detachment of Royal Marines.

Through this Web page we hope to create a readership of not only teenagers but also the older generation many of whom will have passed through our ranks during their formative years. The Cadet Unit has existed for over 100 years and has, therefore, a great history. Over the coming months it is hoped to depict an informative and factual picture of the Unit, outlining it’s achievements and the details of the people that have been part of it’s development and progress.

There will be articles and illustrations depicting the cadets carrying out not only various duties and routines but more importantly enjoying themselves and to give an insight into their training programmes which are designed to develop their potential in every aspect.

There are two specific areas incorporated within the Cadet Unit. Firstly, the Unit Management Committee (UMC). The UMC are the Trustees of the Unit and as such are responsible in Law for everything carried out by the Unit, a great responsibility and complex which will be focused upon in more detail in future articles.

Second is the Parent and Supporters Association (P & SA), currently chaired by Nick O’Brien. This group have a positive influence within the Unit and provide practical help in many instances especially in our fund raising activities. To run the Unit successfully relies a great deal on fund raising. New initiatives are being developed all the time in the battle to stay viable and to provide every opportunity for our youngsters to give them a sound grounding for when they eventually embark on their chosen careers.

So who can join this prestigious organisation?

Any young person who is aged between 13 and 18 years (not including 18) may become a Cadet regardless of background, race or creed. So why not start enjoying your life and see what the world has to offer beyond the computer, i-pods, and other distractions of modern teen life. Or if you are an Adult why not assist our P&SA or perhaps if you are fit and able train as an Adult Instructor.

If you would like any further information why not call me and discuss the matter.
