New Unit

Canterbury Sea Cadets is currently raising money towards the building of a new unit headquaters. In March 2009, The lease on the current site in Puckle Lane will expire. The current location has been earmarked for housing development and as such we have been offered a new site on the Vauxhall Road, next to the river Stour.

The new unit will be large enough to accommodate a substantial increase in numbers. It will also include a large car park/ drill area, camping area to allow use of the local woods for day walking. There will also be a launch site for the units canoes and small sailing boats, this will allow the cadets to utilise the location next to the water.

Included in the new site will be a canoe centre which will be open to the public.

Getting prepared to start day 1

12 Cadets and 4 staff completed the sponsored canoe marathon from Canterbruy to Sandwich over the last few days (13 - 14 August). The Cadets have raised in excess of £400 for the building fund. A very big thank you for all who have supported this event.

The Trip started well in sunshine and light winds, from the site of the new unit in Canterbury. However after lunch the weather turned and the cadets had to fight against heavy winds and driving rain to complete the first day in sunshine again finishing at Plucks Gutter, Canterbury.

The Second started in much the same way, glourious sunshine and light breeze. After a few minor mishaps, (some cadets forgot the river was shared by many other creatures not just cadets), the tip got well and truely under way. The final day was by far the hardest with no stopping points between Plucks Gutter and the final destination of Sandwich Quay. About 3/4 of the way down the river stour the weather turned un-expectedly and the rain started. With this the cold weather started to affect morale. Fortunately with the end in sight the sun came out again the Cadets rallied to the last.

Back On the Water

Over the last 2 weeks, (Easter Holidays). Canterbury Sea Cadets have managed to go boating on 3 of the days. This is the first opporunity the cadets have had to conduct any boating this year, due to the poor weather. Through out the days the cadets have experienced Pulling, Sailing, Powerboating and Canoeing.
