District Shooting Competition 2010
The first win of 2010 Buxton Sea Cadets have defended and won the 2010 District Shooting competition. We also recorded the highest individual score. The event this year was held at the City of Salford shooting club on the 7th Feb 2009. Buxton now go forward to represent the Manchester District at the Area Competition.

Review of 2009

Excellence in the Community
On the 13 Oct P.O Trevor Woolford was presented with an “Excellence in the Community Award” for his service to Buxton Sea Cadets a well deserved award.

Hollingworth Lake
The cadets spent the weekend ( 2nd - 4th Oct ) at Hollingworth Lake, with very high winds on the Saturday it was not safe to sail, so the weekend was spent power boating, resulting in many of the cadets being awarded either RYA Power Boat Level 1 or 2 certificates.

Bag2school
In September the cadets took part in a collection of clothing for bag2school. The cadets collected 420 kilograms of clothing etc for Bag2school and will be receive a cheque for £168. Bag2school is a unique opportunity to raise funds for schools and organisations, it creates employment both at home & abroad and also assist the environment. The cadets will hold another collection next year.

Week at Holyhead
The cadets spent a week at Holyhead Boating Station 22nd – 28th August; this is an annual event for the cadets which sadly this year were the last as the boating station closed this year. Buxton Sea Cadet where the last unit to use the facilities before they closed. Next year the cadets will be going to Weymouth Boating Station which has been completely rebuilt in time for the 2012 Olympics.

Area Sailing Competition
On the Same day as Buxton Carnival the 8 cadets took part in the Area Sailing competition at Hollingworth Lake, near Rochdale. The event attracted sailors from across the North West to this annual event. The cadets sailed in 3 classes Boson, Pico and Topper. Buxton Unit won the overall event. The sailors will now go forward for selection to the National Sailing Regatta which will be held in Southport in September.

Buxton Carnival
The Sea Cadets once again entered a float into this years Buxton Carnival procession which was held on Saturday the 11th July. This year the cadets entered a very impressive Viking long ship complete with a fire breathing dragon figure head. The float was organised by P.O. B Luckman with the junior cadets. Annual Inspection and AGM
The annual Inspection and AGM was held on the 21st May. The inspection had been cancelled in February due to the snow. The evening combined both the inspection and AGM. The parents, friends and members of the RNA were given displays by the cadets followed by a buffet.

Sea Sunday
On Sunday the 10th May 26 cadets attended the annual Sea Sunday Parade at Buxton Methodist Church.

Hayfield May Queen
On Saturday 9th May the Junior cadets took part in Hayfield May Queen procession.

Sailing at Hollingworth Lake
Over the weekend of the 1st - 3rd May 24 cadets spent the weekend sailing at TS Palatine on Hollingworth Lake. The cadets use the facilities twice a year, following the RYA scheme in sailing and power boating.

Area Shooting Competition
On the 19th April Buxton Sea Cadets once again defended and won the Area Shooting Competition which was held this year at Wigan Shooting Club.

Community Matters
Waitrose's new giving initiative, Community Matters, customers are offered a token every time they shop. These can be inserted in one of three Perspex tubes – one for each organisation. At the end of the month the tokens for each organisation are weighed. Then the beneficiaries will then receive a proportion of the cash. In April Buxton Sea Cadets received £300 thank you Waitrose shoppers for your support.

Quiz Night
On the 7 March the Cadets held a very successful quiz night which was enjoyed by the cadets, parents and friends. The prizes were donated by his grace the Duke of Devonshire.

District Shooting Competition
Buxton Sea Cadets have defended and won the District Shooting competition. The event this year was held at the City of Salford shooting club on the 8th Feb 2009. It was a very close competition with three teams taking part Buxton beat Stockport Unit by 3 points. Buxton now go forward to represent the Manchester District at the Area Competition.

Trafalgar Day

On Sunday 19th October 15 cadets and 3 staff attended Trafalgar Day Parade at the Imperial War Museum North. Four of the Buxton cadets were selected to be in the Guard.

Morrisons Bag Pack

The committee would like to thank Morrisons Supermarket for supporting Buxton Sea Cadet Bag Pack. on the 11th Oct 21 Cadets helped pack shoppers bags resulting in a very generous donation. Thank you to all those Morrisons shoppers who supported the cadets. Thank you also to the cadets for packing the bags.

Bulwark, Albion and Centaur Association

On 27 September 14 cadets attended a ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas to re-dedicate a tree planted in memory of the crew of a previous HMS Bulwark which blew up at Sheerness in 1918. Vice Admiral Sir Patrick Symons, president of the Bulwark, Albion and Centaur Association inspected the cadets, who took part in a march past. The Vice Admiral has sent a letter of congratulation on the drill and appearance of the Buxton Unit

National Sailing Competition

North West National Sailing Team

The North West came 3rd in the Sailing and Windsurfing but finished 4th overall at the National Sailing competition at Carrickfergus Sailing Club, Northern Ireland over the weekend of the 19th-21st Sept.

There were many off the water activities over the weekend including, Her Majesty's Royal Marines Band Scotland, Royal Marine Commando's, Northern Ireland District Field Gun team, Tameside Sea Cadets Window Ladder Display Team. Also on the Saturday evening there was an ’It’s a knockout’ Competition for the cadets followed by fireworks.

Well Done Team North West. In 2009 the North West will host the event in Southport

Buxton Carnival 12th July


Whilst a number of the cadets where at the Area Sailing Competition ( see story below ) the rest of the unit took part in the Annual Buxton Carnival. This year’s float was decorated as a pirate ship by the cadets and staff led by Becky and Alex. All the hard work was rewarded with the cadets being awarded 3rd prize in the group ‘Tableau on Vehicle (Youth)’ category and also the ‘Otter Controls Trophy’

Area Sailing Competition 12th July

2008 Sailing Team

This years Area sailing competition took place at T.S Palatine on Hollingworth Lake near Rochdale. Teams came from Blackpool, Buxton, Chorley, Holyhead and Wallasey to compete in the Bosun, Laser, Laser Pico & Topper events. There was a full day’s racing, which resulted in Buxton Sea Cadets winning the Laser and Laser Pico and coming 2nd in the Bosun and Topper events. Well Done Buxton ! The cadets finishing in the top three positions will be returning to Hollingworth Lake in August for the race training and selection for the National Sailing Competition to be held at Carrickfergus in September.

Sailing in the Lake District 30th June – 4th July

2008 Sailing Team

The Sea Cadets again helped with the Buxton Community School annual activity week in the Lake District. The schools’ activities week includes camping, walking, climbing, mountain biking, canoeing and of course sailing. Each day 24 children came to Scarness on the eastern shore of Bassenthwaite Lake to either canoe or sail for the day. Buxton Sea Cadets provides the instructors and rescue cover for the sailing using Wayfarers and Laser Pico’s. When the weather becomes too hot the hull of a Pico can be turned upside down in the water to become a sumo wrestling platform to allow every one to cool down.

Buxton Defend Title

Buxton Sea Cadets successfully defended the Manchester District Open Boys Pulling Competition which was held at Errwood Sailing club on Saturday the 21st June. Over 70 cadets from the Manchester District competed in the competitions. Buxton girls came 3rd in their event. Despite poor weather the completion was a great success. This is the second time that the competition has been held at Errwood Sailing club. The photograph shows the Buxton Teams and the Open Boys trophy.

Annual Flag Day

The Flag Day held in Buxton on the 7th June was a big success. Thank you to all the cadets, staff and committee members who helped on the day. A BIG thank you from all the cadets to the people of Buxton for their generosity.

Area Shooting Competition Winners 2008

Buxton Sea Cadets successfully defended the Area trophies, retaining both the Chetwyn Cup as overall team winners and the Peter Gravestock Trophy for the highest individual score. The event was held at the Altcar range near Liverpool on the 13th April, the team can be seen here with both trophies. Well Done Buxton !

Go Karting

Winners All !

On Sunday the 9th March, 14 cadets spent the morning Go Karting at Swains Centre in Buxton. The cadets split into teams to race one another round the 410m outdoor track.

Here are the cadets on the winners podium. Remember Lewis Hamilton was taken Go Karting for the first time at the age of 8. Who knows where this might lead for one of these cadets !

Burgee Award

Following our annual Royal Navy Inspection in Jan 2008, Buxton Sea Cadets are delighted to have been awarded a Burgee. This is a reflection of the hard work and constant improvements that have been seen at the unit.

Thank you to the Management Committee, Staff, Cadets and Parents for their constant help and support.

A Burgee is awarded to the top 25% of units in each Area. This means that Buxton is firmly in the top 100 units nationally.

District Shooting Competition

On the 10th Feb Buxton Sea Cadets won the Manchester District Shooting Competition. Members of the Buxton team can be seen here with the trophy, which was presented by Lt Cdr (SCC) Jim Garner. The team now go forward to the Area competition later in the year.

Ships Visit

On the Bridge

HMS Bulwark

The cadets and staff of TS Bulwark were invited to visit HMS Bulwark in Liverpool on the 9th Feb. The cadets were given a tour of the ship which lasted almost 3 hours.

MOD Inspection

The annual MOD Inspection on Thursday the 31st January was attended by our President, The Duke of Devonshire CBE, Councillor Jean Wharmby Mayor of the High Peak, and her consort, George Wharmby, Mr Bill Weston MBE Chairman High Peak Mayoral Charities Committee, Mr Dave Parker, Chairman Royal Naval Association, Buxton & High Peak Branch and Mrs Devika Dobson, Commodore, Errwood Sailing Club

The Inspecting Officer was Lieutenant Commander (SCC) Jim Garner. The dignitaries were piped on board and welcomed by Mr Howard Schofield Chairman of the Management Committee and the Commanding Officer, Lt (SCC) Bruce Luckman. At the colours ceremony prayers were led by our Padre, the Reverend Colin Smith.

During the evening the junior cadets displayed the gun drill for firing cannons similar to those used on HMS Victory during the battle of Trafalgar. The senior cadets displayed the preparation required for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Expedition which was for a 2 day canoeing expedition. After evening colours there was a buffet reception hosted by the committee and parents.

It was a pleasure that so many members of the Buxton RNA attended sharing their memories with the cadets

Dickensian Street Market Success

The cadets and committee raised over £300 at the Dickensian Street Market, in the Pavilion Gardens. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success.

Bag Pack
The cadets raised more than £1,000 during an all day bag pack on the 3rd Nov at Morrison’s Supermarket in Buxton. A big thank you from the committee to all the cadets and to Morrison’s supermarket.

Trafalgar Day Parade
On the 21st Nov 8 cadets and 3 staff took part with other cadets from the Manchester District in the Trafalgar Day Parade at the Imperial War Museum in Manchester.

Remembrance Sunday

Buxton Unit

On Remembrance Sunday the Sea Cadets paraded with other Buxton organisations to commemorate British Service personnel who had fallen in the two World Wars and other conflicts.

“Tradewinds” Sailing

A very successful week

10 cadets and 2 staff spent a week on two “Tradewinds” yachts, TS Vigilant and TS City of Liverymen. Each boat took 5 cadets, 1 member of staff and a skipper. The living space was very cramped and the cadets had to learn to cook when under way. They started from Gosport and sailed to different places every day along the south coast. The cadets had a superb experience and all were awarded a RYA Competent Crew qualification and Sea Cadet Off-Shore Sailing Grade 2. More photographs can been seen in the Picture Gallery

2008 Activities

29th Feb - Well done to Ant and Nathan who came 2nd and 3rd in the Errwood Sailing Club Wednesday Night Sailing Series for 2007. They were presented with their awards at the Annual Errwood Sailing club Dinner by Devi Dobson Club Commodore.

16 - 17th Feb - Well done to the 6 female cadets who gained their level 3 communications certificates at SCTC Inskip.

10th Feb - Buxton win the District Shooting Competition

2007 Activities

This years acttivites include

3 cadets are on HMS Caledonia for the summer.

Holyhead In July, 26 cadets from the Unit spent a week at Holyhead, where many gained RYA Sailing qualifications.

Area Sailing Competition

On 14 July 2007, the cadets won the North West Area Sailing Regatta, competing against the best Sea Cadet Units from the North West Area, many of which are situated on the coast.

The Unit achieved 1st Place in the Laser class crewed by Ben Stones; in the Laser Pico class, we achieved 1st and 2nd with our team of Jacob Essex and Nathan Fowler;

Anthony Hargreaves and Tom Sellors came 2nd in the Bosun open event and in the Junior Topper event, Naomi Hargreaves and Rada Ibisheva were successful in gaining 2nd and 3rd places.

All the team will go forward for the Northwest slection weekend for the National Regatta

Buxton Win District Pulling

We achieved 1st place in the District Senior Boys “Pulling” (rowing) competition held at Errwood Sailing Club in June.

Area Shooting Competition

In April 2007, the Unit won the Area Shooting Competition for which they received the Chetwynd Cup. One of our cadets, Nathan Fowler, won an award for the “Best shot”.
