Offshore Aboard TS JOHN JERWOOD

The two principle vessels of the Sea Cadet Offshore Fleet: TS JOHN JERWOOD (outboard), used for power training, and TS ROYALIST (inboard), a 100' brigantine.

The JERWOOD can accomodate 12 cadets and 2 adult supervisors together with a permanent crew of four. She was commissioned in September 2002.

A new ship, the TS JACK PETCHEY, is presently on order and is due to enter service in late 2008 or early 2009. Built to the same design as the JERWOOD, the PETCHEY will also accomodate upto 12 cadets for cruises. It is expected to be based in or around London and work near the East Coast.

Two smaller sail training yachts, TS VIGILANT and TS CITY LIVERYMAN, each accomodating five cadets, one supervisor and a permanent skipper also operate from Gosport. The TS BOB ALLEN, a mini-brig, is the flagship of the Junior Sea Cadets.

The ship takes a roll - its not the horizon thats gone wonky.

PPO Redford becomes the first casualty of seasickness. We'll spare you the mental image of the results!

And with a flat calm sea as well, this cadet can't work out what this seasickness stuff is all about either.

Anyone seen France? I'm sure it was around somewhere...

Unseasonably fine weather allows for a day alongside in Cherbourg.

Marine Cadets on Exercise

Bournemouth and Weymouth Marine Cadets teamed up for a joint training exercise at the Mexe Training Area near Bovington Camp recently in preparation for the Annual Field Assessment.

This Field Assessment is intended to demonstrate to serving Royal Marines how well all aspects of tactical fieldcraft is being taught within the Unit.

This series of phots shows the marine cadets training in Section Battle Drills.

How many marine cadets can you spot in this phot? Look closely...

The marine cadets are equipped with the L98A1 Cadet GP Rifle - the cadet version of the standard SA80 weapon used by UK Armed Forces. This weapon has been converted to remove it's capacity for automatic firing.

Has anyone seen the enemy? Anyone?

Final Boatwork Course of 2007

One of the highlights of the weekend was this race between an ASC pulling boat and a Canadian Canoe crewed by two instructors - neither of whom had stepped foot in the boat before! Much to the annoyance of the pulling crew, the instructors won... after the pullers tried to illegally carve them at the start.

Part of the Pulling syllabus requires candidates to row a small dinghy solo around a short course.

Candidates for Coxswain, Supervised Coxswain and Competent Crew demonstrate their teamwork as they prepare for a man-overboard exercise.

TS ROYALIST 2007 (part 1)

The combined team from Bournemouth, Parkstone and Christchurch Sea Cadets arrive at Bournemouth International Airport prior to flying to Glasgow to pick up TS ROYALIST.

The ROYALIST crew walk out to the aircraft to take their seats. And yes, that is them, although you may have to squint a bit to see.

Probably the first and only time you'll see a plane on a sea cadet website. Make the most of it!

And they're off. Much to the relief of staff and parents alike. Six months of planning, stress and last minute hiccups all over. Until the trip back.

The girls give it a bit of welly as they make sure of second place in the competition. BZ!

2007 Natural Resources Weekend

Cadets from Bournemouth Sea Cadets took part in a Natural Resources weekend at a local military training area recently. They learned about how to use nature to live comfortably using only what they found in the environment around them.

This phot shows one of the groups constructing a lean-to type shelter by building a lattice of wooden poles over a natural hollow in the ground watched by an instructor.

Group 2's shelter comprised of an A-frame placed under an Rhododendron bush. This cadet is in the process of waterproofing and insulating the structure by covering the exposed face with plant leaves.

Group 3 decided to build their own shelter inside a rhododendron bush. This cadet is putting the finishing touches to the structure by laying a bin bag, one of the only artifical components allowed, over the frame.

Group 4 decided to use existing man-made features to build their features around. They laid a roof and added two sides to these WW2-vintage concrete blocks.

Of course the instructors had to demonstrate the different types of shelters available and knocked up examples of lean-tos and A-frames while the cadets were given a tour of the training area.

"Job done," said Bob the Builder.
