Where are we and what do we do?
Birmingham Vernon is part of a National Organisation known as The Marine Society and Sea Cadets, however we operate a local level and are a charity within our own right. We meet three times a week at our headquarters at Edgbaston Reservoir and only charge £1.00 each time a young person attends. The facilities are available to both boys and girls between the ages of 10 - 18 years. The unit provides young people the opportunity to gain instruction and Nationally recognised qualifications in many areas such as sailing, canoeing, rowing, sail boarding, power boating, band, first aid, camping, football and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme but to name a few. At Vernon we are lucky enough to be able to offer to young people the opportunity to follow either The Royal Navy or The Royal Marines with staff and training programmes for both sections. All staff are volunteers, fully qualified and are CRB (Criminal records Bureau) checked. So if your bored and think you've got nothing to do then bring a mate along and give it a go - you don’t know unless you try! You might actually enjoy yourself.
