HMS Bristol

A group photo of our cadets on board HMS Bristol January 2010 Drill and Piping Weekend. This was the first experience for lots of our new cadets on board a real naval ship from Friday to Sunday

The New Fleet

These are our new fleet of Kayaks which were acquired in May this year with the financial support of the Oxfordsire Community Fund.

The result of these acquisitions was that 9 cadets following a 7 week course at Boddington Reservoir all passed their BCU 1 STAR course.

Next will be the turn of our juniors and at the beginning of August the next batch of 10 cadets will commence training on the BCU 1 Star course, these courses will continue until all cadets have gained the BCU 1 STAR and then we will commence the BCU 2STAR syllabus, so that by June 2010 we will be able to enter the District Paddlesport Regetta with as many enteries as possible

Training at Banbury

Their first Kayak lesson

We have our own "fleet" of training craft, which includes our own ASC,number 127, we have with sponsorship from the Oxford Community Foundation been able to purchase 10 brand new kayaks with trailer and accessories, and following a donationation from the Doris Field Trust in Oxford we have brought a 14ft Dell Quay Dory with trailer.

We have become members ofthe Banbury Sailing Club based just outside Banbury at Boddington Reservoir, and with their help we are able to offer a full range of waterbourne activities whilst our new staff get their own qualifications.

Float Testing the new Dory

Here we see our C.O's wife, and young son together with two members of staff float testing our new 14ft Dell Quay Dory before putting it to unit service - it would have been better if they had checked the fuel levels before setting off!!!

It is hoped that the dory will serve two purposes during its service in the unit, firstly as a safety boat for other boating activities and secondly for instructional purposes for cadets to train in the RYA Power boat syllabus.

Guess who?

Here is one of the Sea Cadets youngest ever recruits!

No he was'nt the first recruit to the Navy Boys Brigade, to help you this picture was taken in 1950 - you will note that he was very young for the rank!

The clue is that despite everything he still has the same rank today, although it can be confirmed that he must of been "busted" a few times in his career as there is evidence of him passing for Cadet Petty Officer in 1965!

There are other photos showing him as an adult Petty Officer as the OIC of his unit at HMS Raleigh in 1988 - this maybe explains why today he is still only a lieutenant - but surely he deserves his long service medal after nearly 60 years in the blue suit!!!

Still not sure who it is .........the answer is at the unit today!
